1. General

Masonry veneer systems provided with an air space, pressure equalized with the outside, Constitute a perfect example of a rain screen wall. This wall consists of a masonry facing tied to a structural backup, which can be masonry, concrete, wood or metal studs. The success of the rain screen approach in the masonry veneer wall depends largely on the following critical elements.

1.1. A clean air space not obstructed or bridged by mortar, and wide enough to avoid contact with the backup wall; variations in the wall tolerances make it necessary to recommend a minimum design width of 1-inch.

1.2. Properly detailed flashings at all required locations.

1.3. Sufficient unobstructed weepholes, to provide drainage to the exterior and to act as air pressure equalization holes.

1.4. An air barrier as part of the backup wall to assure that the air pressure differential occurs across the backup wall.
